David N. Baker
Singer • Musician • Lead Vocalist • Dr. Dope
David N. Baker is a singer and musician from Assam, India, best known as the lead vocalist of Dr. Dope — Dr. Declan Oppenheimer’s Polyphonic Experience, a Guwahati-based band known for blending Western rock with Assamese folk and musical influences.
David comes from a family connected to Assam’s performing arts. He is the son of George Baker, the legendary actor associated with the acclaimed Assamese film Chameli Memsaab. While cinema formed an important part of his family background, David carved his own artistic path through music.
His Musical Journey
David’s musical influences extend across rock, blues, folk and singer-songwriter traditions, along with the rich musical heritage of Assam. His approach to music is not restricted to a single genre; instead, he focuses on melody, emotion, storytelling and the connection between the musician and the listener.
His work with Dr. Dope showcases this philosophy through a distinctive combination of rock, folk, acoustic sounds, harmonica and Assamese musical sensibilities.
Dr. Dope
Dr. Dope, short for Dr. Declan Oppenheimer’s Polyphonic Experience, is one of the most significant chapters of David Baker’s musical career. The band’s sound brings together contemporary Western influences with elements rooted in Assam, creating music that feels both international and distinctly local.
Songs associated with Dr. Dope include “Hiya Jolai,” “O Hori O,” “That’s The Way It Goes,” “Deal With The Devil,” “I’ll Keep Rolling On” and “Loving You.”
The band has also performed on notable music platforms, including the Ziro Festival of Music, helping bring its distinctive sound to audiences beyond Assam.
Music with a Human Touch
David has also spoken about the changing music industry and the growing influence of artificial intelligence. His perspective reflects his belief that while technology can assist musicians, human emotion, creativity and personal expression remain at the heart of music.
For David, music is ultimately about expression—bringing together different influences, telling stories and creating an emotional connection with the audience.
Today, David N. Baker continues his musical journey with Dr. Dope, representing a sound that is rooted in Assam, inspired by the world and driven by the human spirit.
